Rep. Windschitl serves as the Speaker Pro Tempore of the Iowa House, and sits on the Administration & Rules, Judiciary, Veterans Affairs, and Ways & Means committees.
First elected in 2006 at the age of 22, Matt became the youngest legislator serving in the Iowa General Assembly at that time. In 2009, his Republican colleagues in the Iowa House elected Matt as a House Republican Assistant Minority Leader and he was reelected as an Assistant Majority Leader in November of 2010 as well as in November of 2012. In 2014 Matt was elected to serve as the Speaker Pro-Tempore and reelected to this position in 2015.
Matt was born in December 1983, in Marshalltown, Iowa. His father works for the Union Pacific Railroad and his mother runs the family business, Double Barrel Shooters Supply. Matt went on to receive his formal education at home before attending Colorado School of Trades for gunsmithing in 2004. Matt is a trained gunsmith and occasionally does gunsmithing at the family-owned store in Missouri Valley. He also works full-time as a switchman for the Union Pacific Railroad.
Matt and Ivelisse Windschitl were married in July 2003 and together have two daughters Anna and Addy.
Hard work and service to the community have been on ongoing part of Matt’s everyday life. In June 2001, he joined the United States Marine Corps at the age of 17. He proudly served 6 years in the United States Marine Corps Reserves as a mechanic with the Engineer Maintenance Company, 4th Marine Logistics Group, 4th Maintenance Battalion. Matt served a tour of duty in Iraq in 2005, and was Honorably Discharged from the Marine Corps Reserves as a Sergeant in June of 2009.
