Sara HuddlestonToday, former Storm Lake City Council member Sara Huddleston announced that she will run for State Representative in House District 11, which includes both Buena Vista and Sac Counties.

“I’m running for the Iowa House of Representatives to bring back common sense priorities like educating our children and helping small businesses create jobs,” said Sara Huddleston. “The current legislature has chosen to prioritize scoring partisan political points rather than helping Iowans.”

Sara is a former Storm Lake City Council member who served three consecutive terms in office and holds the distinction of being the first Latin-American woman to be elected to public office in the state of Iowa.  During her time in office she served as a member of the Lake Improvement Commission and as a member of the Board of Appeals for the City of Storm Lake. Sara’s service extends across Iowa as she was appointed by Governor Tom Vilsack as a Commissioner for the Latino Affairs Commission in the State of Iowa under the Department of Human Rights.

“As State Representative I will work with all Iowans, regardless of political party to find the best solutions for the complex issues facing Iowa,” said Huddleston. “Rather than cut funding from schools like the current legislature, I will prioritize adequately funding our public schools so that Iowa’s children are well prepared for the jobs of the 21st century economy.”

Sara earned an Associate of Arts from Iowa Central Community College and her Bachelor of Arts in political science from Buena Vista University. She is married to Matthew Huddleston and they have a sixteen year-old daughter, Alexis who is a sophomore at Storm Lake Saint Mary’s High School.
