GOP: Meet Our Members – Tom Sands

Representative Tom Sands is currently serving his seventh term in the Iowa House.  He represents Iowa’s 88th District which includes Columbus Junction, Wapello, and Mediapolis.

Rep. Sands is the Chairman of the Ways & Means committee and also serves on the Commerce, Ethics, and Legislative Council committees.

Tom was born on September 13, 1954 in Muscatine.  He grew up in Columbus Junction and graduated from Columbus Junction High School in 1972.  Following graduation, Tom attended Muscatine Community College.  Currently, Tom works as a banker, real estate appraiser, and owner of the family farm.

Tom is married to Catherine and they have three grown children: Joshua, Jacob and Anna, and seven grandchildren.  The Sands family belongs to the United Methodist Church in Mediapolis.

Tom is a member of the Sons of the American Legion, National Rifle Association, Corn Growers, and Soybean Associations.  He is involved with the Louisa County Farm Bureau and the Louisa County Cattleman’s Association.

Prior to serving in the House, Tom was a Concord Township Trustee and elected to the Columbus Junction City Council.

Tom has received numerous awards and honors for his legislative work.  These include:

  • 2005 Legislator of the Year from the Iowa Association of Mortgage Bankers
  • House Republican Rep. of the Year from the Iowa Bankers Association
  • Friend of Agriculture from the Iowa Farm Bureau
