Dems: Iowa lifts ban on poultry exhibitions

January 10, 2016

The Iowa Department of Agriculture & Land Stewardship has lifted the state ban on live bird exhibitions at fairs, livestock auctions, swap meets, sales and other events due to avian influenza.

The Department prohibited poultry exhibitions on May 21 after an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza, with the goal of minimizing its spread and protecting Iowa’s domestic bird population. A total of 77 facilities and 31.5 million turkey and chicken flocks were affected with the disease in Iowa. No new cases of this bird flu have been found since June.
