GOP: Meet Our Members – John Kooiker

Representative John Kooiker is currently serving his first term in the Iowa House.  He represents Iowa’s 4th District, which includes Orange City, Rock Valley, and Sioux Center.

Rep. Kooiker is the Vice Chairman of the Transportation, Infrastructure, & Capitals budget subcommittee, and also serves on the Labor, Local Government, Public Safety, and Veterans Affairs committees.

John was born in Hull, Iowa to John and Johanna(Vermeer) Kooiker.  He was the Valedictorian as asenior in high school and went on to graduate Calvin College in 1968 with degree in Math Education.  Following graduation he served in U.S. Army as a sentry dog handler and later as medical records clerk at Ft. Riley, KS.

John taught high school physics and math at the Christian Academy in Japan from 1971-1975 and upon his return, attended Kansas State University.  In 1977, John became a rural mail carrier, which he would continue until his retirement in December 2005.

Since retiring John has traveled, substituted in high school classrooms, gardened, engaged in community volunteering,  kept sheep, served on his local Church council as an elder and enjoys spending time with his nine grandchildren.  He married his wife, Sherry, in June of 1971.
